Qualifications Explained

Level 3 Qualifications

ADVANCED LEVEL (LEVEL 3)
For students who obtain five and more GCSEs at grades A to C or equivalent qualifications. On completion of a Level 3 programme, successful students may go on to university, jobs or training schemes.

ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS) LEVELS
A Levels are a two year programme of academic study. The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level lasts one year and is a single award. The standard is between GCSE and A Level, is worth 50% of the Advanced Level and is a qualification in its own right. You normally take four AS Levels. On successful completion you take three to four A2 Levels the following year to achieve the full A Level award.

ADVANCED (A2) LEVELS
An A2 course lasts one year and builds on AS Level which counts as 50% of the overall A Level grade. Most universities require completion of at least three full A Levels for admission to degree courses.

APPLIED AS AND A LEVELS
These courses have an AS/A2 structure and are comparable to the existing Advanced Levels. They provide a broad introduction to a vocational area and encourage work-related contexts. It is possible to gain two AS Levels in Year 1 and two A2 Levels in Year 2.

LEVEL 3 BTEC EXTENDED DIPLOMAS (FORMERLY BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMAS)
Level 3 Extended Diplomas are two year programmes that combine practical and academic aspects and are designed to cover specific areas of employment. They are equivalent to three A Levels. Assessment is based on assignments rather than written exams.

For entry to Higher Education, this course is equivalent to three A Levels and is gained through a combination of College-based study and work placement.
