An orphanage in Bolivia and the slums of Nairobi are the destinations for two Farnham Sixth Form College students later this year, after they won an annual award.

Tegan Creedy, a talented musician from Farnham studying for her A Levels at the College, will journey to the town on Conchabamba to spend a month working with orphaned children as a volunteer on a musical project. She said: “I am so pleased to have received this award. Through involving myself in this project, I will be able to use my musical ability in a practical way and it will allow me to see first hand whether the career of a music therapist or indeed counsellor is of long term appeal to me”.

Travelling to Nairobi in August, Ashleigh Martin, who lives in Aldershot, will be participating in a volunteering project to coach football and rugby to underprivileged children for four weeks before attempting to climb Mount Kenya at the end of her visit. She said: “I hope this challenge will change both my life and the lives of those I’m going to coach so I can return some of the investment that has been made in both my education and physical activities”. Ashleigh hopes the experience will prepare her for a career as a combat medical technician in the British Army.

Both students were successful in their applications for the John Goddard Award, an annual award in the name of an ex-student. Its purpose is to enable a full-time student to undertake an expedition, sporting or music project which otherwise may not be possible. It is one of several awards given by the College to support outstanding students to support their college studies, educational and career aspirations, towards building a better future.
