This year’s Farnham Sixth Form College scholarship students celebrate their success.
Budding scientists, artist and entrepreneurs have moved a step closer to their dream careers by winning Farnham Sixth Form College scholarships to help them reap their potential.
Scholarships are awarded to students with clear ability and ambition to succeed. They help with the cost of essentials such as textbooks and equipment or can fund research opportunities and travel. Some students even plan to use the cash creatively in setting up part-time businesses, earning income to help them meet the soaring tuition fees they face at university.
Scholarship students regularly get top grades and their first choice of university, adding to the College’s high success rates, and enter careers such as medicine, law, teaching, accounting and the arts. Last year’s scholarship students included Tegan Creedy who achieved straight A*s in A Level Economics, English Literature and History and used her scholarship to fund wider reading and research.
This year’s scholarships have been awarded to students such as Katie Bickerton of Farnham, who excelled in sciences, maths and French at Heath End School and wants to be an earth scientist or an engineer. Saghir Malik, who has done voluntary work in Africa and is involved in engaging young people from underprivileged backgrounds through a national charity, is one of several scholarship students who hope to become doctors. Fonticha Tran aims to study business management and become an entrepreneur and the scholarship could help set up a small business that would support her studies. Ayla Stenning has yet to decide on a career but her scholarship may help her “assess what real world applications my A Level subjects have so my career can have maximum impact on society”.
Fred Carter, Director of Farnham Sixth Form College, said: “Our students consistently achieve excellent A Level results and the pass rate improved even further this year to an outstanding 99.6%. Part of our success lies in our student-centred approach and by awarding these scholarships we hope to recognise and nurture exceptional talent as well as offering a helping hand to students who may not have access to all the resources that could help them achieve their ambitions.”
