Scholars Stride into a Bright Future

Monday 26 October 2009

Outstanding students with great potential are being helped to achieve their dreams of working in medicine, teaching, law, art and acting, with scholarships from Farnham College.

Scholarship students regularly get top grades and their first choice of university, adding to the College’s high success rates, which were recognised in a recent Ofsted inspection. Scholarships can help pay for essentials such as textbooks and equipment, fund overseas travel or pay for research opportunities, towards building a better future.

Daisy Brown, A Level student and President of the Student Council at Farnham College, is one of the beneficiaries from last year. After excelling in her GCSEs, she is now studying A Levels in Maths, Biology and Chemistry and says: “It’s not just the money; it’s a doorway to a better education. Farnham College could ultimately help me to help others, by becoming an NHS GP.” Daisy hopes to specialise in women’s health.

For Mikayla Rowe, a scholarship means the opportunity to pursue her interests in art and design. “It is a subject where you have the freedom to express and develop your own personal style within the work you create,” she said. William Beattie, currently studying A Levels in English Literature, English Language, History and Law, hopes it will be the start of a career in law while Harriet David-Wilkinson, of Woking, is aiming for a job where she can use her knowledge of languages and indulge her love of travel. Her sponsorship money will be used to fund work experience in France or Spain.

Other scholarship students this year include Thomas Dawes, who plans to study dentistry, Flo Reynolds, of Hook, who hopes to become an artist or writer, Georgia Goode, who has decided on a career in physiotherapy after a work experience placement at Basingstoke Hospital and Molly Tuppen, who wants to “make an impact on other people’s lives” by becoming a head teacher.
